IS SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS CAUSING TERRORISM?

It seems that no place is safe from potential terrorist activities any more. But what is causing this uprising of terrorism throughout the world? According to Dr. Ernest Lane, it is quite possibly a rigid attitude of self-righteousness. Terrorists who are infused with the righteousness of their beliefs have caused many casualties and much damage in Oklahoma City, New York City and other sites around the globe.

In his new book, Wiley’s Discovery – A Fantasy Search for God (Creek Publishing, September, 2007), Dr. Lane explores concerns about fundamental beliefs and how these beliefs are held. He examines the danger of excessive self-righteousness as a root cause of terrorism.

Deep faith can lead some to perform wonderful acts of benevolence and generous humanitarianism. On the other hand, some individuals seek an avenue in which to express their aggression, and strong commitment to a religious doctrine may well serve their need. They may feel that such commitment can justify hostile action.

Self-righteousness is often associated with religious commitment because such commitment usually provides a feeling of self-importance and assuredness. Of course, the issue is complex, but religious sects that cite doctrinal differences as their opposition to others may do so partly out of a desire for a feeling of righteousness and superiority, even to the extent of harming others. As the fantasy character Grasshopper says, “Why be self-righteous if there is nothing you can feel better than others about? How can we be self-righteous if we can’t feel superior? We need others to look down on. Without differences how could we feel better than others?”

The concepts of self-righteousness and moral certainty are important concerns in today’s world. Many people are searching for answers to the meaning of life and too often finding their answers in extremist organizations. Wiley’s Discovery not only explores these concepts but guides the reader into other possibilities and ways of making sense of the world. The author approaches this complex topic in an easy-to-access way with a unique light touch that eases the path for realizing different points of view. This is a “must read” for those searching for their own understanding of the universe.
